Colt Wins Red Dot: Best of the Best Award

Award for pioneering design: Colt Coltlite CLST receives Red Dot: Best of the Best Award

After a multi-day evaluation process in which all submitted products were individually tested and evaluated, Colt's Coltlite CLST louvered natural ventilator received the highest award of the competition, the Red Dot: Best of the Best. This internationally recognised Red Dot seal is only awarded to products with a high design quality, with only the best products of a category being awarded ‘Best of the Best’. Other winners include Ferrari, Philips, Bulgari, Porsche and Sony.

Aesthetic louvred  window

The Coltlite CLST Louvred natural ventilator is the latest addition to the Coltlite range. Coltlite CLST is an aesthetic, high quality and effective solution tested to EN 14351-1, with a completely flat glazed appearance. The thermally broken louvre frames, which can open to 90 degrees, are only visible from the inside.

These features give the ventilator a very elegant appearance from the outside when in the closed position, meaning it can be integrated into the façade without compromising the appearance of the building. Whilst made up of a series of louvres, the glass surface appears completely flat when seen from the outside.

Evaluating good design

The Red Dot Award: Product Design, which has existed since 1955, identifies the best products of each year. In 2018, designers and manufacturers from 59 nations submitted more than 6,300 objects to the competition. True to the motto "In search of good design and innovation", a jury of around 40 assessed the products individually. The rigorous evaluation criteria, which include innovation, functionality, formal quality, ergonomics and longevity, form a framework for deciding the eventual winners.

There are three types of awards given out; The Red Dot: ‘Best of the Best’ is reserved for the best products in a category. Only 1% of submissions received this award. The Red Dot is the award for high design quality, while the Honorable Mention is awarded for a particularly successful aspect of creative work.

As a “Best of the Best” winner, the Coltlite CLST will be displayed in the Red Dot Design Museum Essen, published in the Red Dot Design Yearbook and featured on the website en.red-dot.org/.
