Vedanta aluminium smelter, India

Vedanta Aluminium Ltd. (VAL), a subsidiary of Vedanta Resources PLC, has its principal locations in two districts (Kalahandi & Jharsuguda) of Orissa.

VAL is one of the world's premier alumina refining complexes in terms of its technology, human resources and high quality infrastructure.

At Jharsuguda VAL constructed an aluminium smelter comprising a 1.75 MTPA aluminium smelter, a 5x135 MW captive power plant, 4x600 MW independent power plants, a rail infrastructure for coal, aluminium & finished product and a modern township.

The location of the project means that temperatures can reach 50°C, the wind speed can be as high as 145 km/h and defence against 200 mm/h of rain during the monsoon is required. Colt supplied Labyrinth natural ventilators made from high quality materials so as to be able to withstand these conditions.

Following a survey and after making calculations, Colt installed a scheme of Labyrinth natural ventilators. Each of the eight potrooms with a length of 1,200m is equipped with a 9m wide Labyrinth unit.

In addition all other buildings, including an anode bake facility, a cast house and workshops are equipped with Labyrinth ventilators.
